Pollution prevention promotes continuous improvement through operational and behavioral changes. Pollution prevention is a shared responsibility among governments and individuals, industrial, commercial, institutional, and community sectors. It focuses on areas such as: substances of concern, efficient use and conservation of natural resources, operating practices, and clean production processes which create less waste.

An Environmental Management System (EMS) is that aspect of an organization's overall management function that determines and implements its environmental policy. It is all encompassing and may include pollution prevention programs, pollution control initiatives, remediation and/or disposal. The course material is based entirely on US EPA Organizational Guide to Pollution Prevention.

At the conclusion of this course, the learner will have a better understanding of the Procedures for Pollution Prevention as well as the following:
