This course material illustrates several applications of RFID technology related to pavement construction. The course material explains the feasibility of using RFID tags to track HMA placement, as well as the real-time measurement of pavement temperatures with depth and time during intelligent compaction. The material is based on Use of Radio Frequency Identification Tags in Pavements, FHWA Publication No., FHWA-HRT-14-061, Chapters 1 – 3.

After completing this course, the learner will have a better understanding of the identification of appropriate RFID technology for pavement data analysis, as well as an understanding of following topics:

• RFID technology
• RFID tracking of HMA, and PCC placement
• Pavement temperature measurement using SAW RFID
• Preliminary evaluations of RFID systems
• Prototype tag development and evaluation
