Wood framing construction is the predominant method of building homes and apartments in the United States enabling this nation to have the world’s best housed population. Increasingly, wood framing is also being used in commercial and industrial buildings. Wood frame buildings are economical to build, heat and cool and provide maximum comfort to occupants. Wood construction is readily adaptable to traditional, contemporary and the most futuristic building styles.

The purpose of this course is to summarize and illustrate conventional construction rules as a guide for builders and engineers. The course material is based entirely on the American Forest and Paper Association and American Wood Council Publication: Details for Conventional Wood Frame Construction.

At the conclusion of this course, the learner will have a better understanding of the Principles of Wood Frame Construction as well as an understanding of the following topics:

• Lumber seasoning
• Various types of frame construction
• Various procedures for protection against termites and decay
• Framing around chimneys and fire places
• Flooring and wood decking procedures
• Using insulation and vapor retarders
